Mac Book Pro Late 2013 13inch + AOC U2868PQU running with 3840x2160@46hz

I recently stumbled over the AOC U2868PQU which is a very cost-efficient monitor. It is capable of 3840x2160 at 60hz. Sadly, my Mac Book Pro Retina Late 2013 with 13 inch does not support an output of 60hz at this high resolution. Well, after a short time of searching I found some workarounds (1, 2).

First of all, I was not able to get this monitor running with 52hz. Actually, I got it up to 46hz. Which is still much better than 30hz which I do not recommend for daily use.

  • Install & download SwitchResX
  • If you are using El Captain, you need to temporary disable System Integrity Protection
  • Select "U2868", go to "User defined Resolutions" and add a new one with the following settings:
  • Save
  • Reboot
  • Open SwitchResX, select "U2868", go to "Available Resolutions" and select "1920x1080, 45Hz" (That is the setting where HiDPI is enabled!)
